If you’re investing in that hair whether extensions or natural, your sunscreen matters more than you think! Many traditional sunscreens contain ingredients like avobenzone and octocrylene that can cause discoloration—especially on lighter blondes (hello peachy/pink tones 😩).
Here’s how to protect your hair AND your glow:
☀️ Choose mineral sunscreens ONLY (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide only)
few recommendations:
*Sun Bum Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50, (easiest to find)
*Supergoop! Mineral Sheerscreen SPF 30: (no white cast)
*Banana Boat Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen Spray SPF 50 (most affordable)
☀️ Style your hair, THEN apply mineral sunscreen (styling tips listed below)
☀️ Hands OFF your hair after applying SPF (trust me)
☀️ Avoid spraying near your hairline & part
☀️ Rinse + cleanse after sun + sweat days
☀️ Use a leave-in with UV protection (this is a must for EVERYONE)- I highly recommend Alurams Leave-in conditioner containing BOTH heat AND UV protection!
Swimming with extensions? Read this first 👇
Your best bet when swimming in any sort of water (salt or chlorine.. ocean or pool) is to keep your weave out of the fun! If you just can't resist here are some tips to protect your hair and your weave!!
🏖️ Rinse your hair with clean cool water BEFORE swimming (it helps close the cutlce; blocking chlorine + salt from absorbing into your hair) *Do NOT shampoo just rinse. Shampooing and or using warm water can open your cuticle allowing the yucky stuff in.
🏖️ Apply a leave-in conditioner or light oil to WET hair for a protective barrier
🏖️ Braid it or top knot it to prevent tangling and matting- do this BEFORE applying sunscreen and then do not touch your hair after applying
🏖️ Avoid underwater hair flips (cute… but damaging- sorry)
🏖️ Rinse IMMEDIATELY after swimming (don’t let chlorine or salt sit)
🏖️ Follow with 2 shampoos + deep condition to restore moisture
What to do IF you have an ooppsie!?! Don’t panic—but don’t ignore it either!
First things first (ASAP):
🚿 Rinse immediately with warm water to remove as much residue as possible
🧴 Cleanse with a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo (focus where the sunscreen touched most)
🫧 Repeat if needed—one wash usually isn’t enough
💧 Deep condition to restore moisture and slip
If you notice discoloration (peachy/pink/orange tones):
✨ Try a clarifying wash (1–2 times max, spaced out to avoid drying)
✨ Use a purple toning shampoo to help neutralize unwanted warmth
✨ Avoid heat styling right away—heat can set the discoloration
✨ Pause on more sunscreen near the hairline until corrected
Real talk: Some chemical sunscreen reactions can stain extensions and natural hair leaving is dull and discolored—especially lighter blondes. Prevention is always your best option but it you do make a summer hair ooppsie the tone isn’t budging after a couple washes, it’s time for a professional treatment, gloss/toner or extension refresh.
As ALWAYS please feel free to reach out to ask questions!!! I love educating you on all things hair and much rather you ask me than get lost in an internet search trying ALL the things! LOL
